Fabric Care 101: Reading Your Garment Labels

Why the label matters

That small tag inside your collar or side seam tells you exactly how a garment should be washed, dried, and ironed. Ignoring it is one of the most common ways clothes get damaged, shrunk, or faded.

  • A washtub symbol with a number shows the maximum safe wash temperature.
  • A crossed-out tub means the item shouldn't be machine washed at all.
  • A triangle symbol relates to bleach — crossed out means no bleach, ever.

The symbols worth memorizing

  • Circle: dry cleaning only.
  • Square with a circle inside: safe for tumble drying (dots show heat level).
  • Iron symbol with dots: low, medium, or high heat — no dots usually means do not iron.

When in doubt, don't guess

If a label is worn off or you're unsure what a symbol means, it's safer to have the item professionally cleaned than to risk it in a home wash. Our dry cleaning and wash & fold teams check labels on every item before treating it, so delicate and unusual fabrics are always handled correctly.
